They reveal something of what is inside. If charity is there, it will become visible outwardly, but if you have no charitable feelings, you can still obey the command.
FROM MY DESK:

If you live in one of the Southern states, like I do, you’re probably noticing that the promise of spring is all but here. You can smell it in the air, hear it in the robin’s trills. Longer days, warmer temperatures, neighbors out pruning trees and shrubs, and pink blooms are beginning to peek from the front azalea bushes. In celebration of the joy of spring, I’ve joined forces with the local women over 50, as a green rookie (pun intended), at our local nursery and garden centers to help make yards more pleasant and colorful places. As I roam
the aisles, stopping to sniff, examine, and admire the bright
blooms, the well loved and oft quoted verses from Matthew 6
continually comes to mind,

“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil
not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even
Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day
is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more
clothe you, O ye of little faith?”

When I was first praying about the decision to start Bellissima! Modesty Boutique, it was one of the verses that the Lord used to remind me that He really cares about our clothes. That when clothing the lilies, He cared enough to not merely dress them, but to dress them beautifully and with grace!

Consider the lilies with me for a moment… they’re gorgeous flowers! They come in various sizes, shapes, colors- snowy white, bright pink, flaming orange, and more! None are the same; each is unique, with it’s own style and flair. Far from being only practical, they do more than serve a
physical purpose; they represent and showcase the creativity and beauty of The Artist. They brighten and bless anyone who walks by and notices their exquisite bloom.

How much more should we, as His daughters, cloth ourselves in not only modest clothing, but graceful, beautiful, and artistic apparel! Apparel that is representative of the Creator God that we serve! Apparel that splashes grace and beauty into a world that is often stark and drab. Whatever we do, whether we eat, or drink, or dress ourselves, we are called to do it all to the glory of God! (1 Cor 10:31) What a privilege!

So this spring, whether you’re wandering through Texas bluebonnets, petunias, daffodils, tulips, lilies, or whatever blossoms adorn your life path, use them as a reminder to apply your own unique personality, style, and flair to clothe yourself not only modestly, but beautifully! Representing to those around us The Artist, The Creator, our Father in Heaven, who supplies our every need and who cares about every detail of our life… even what clothes we wear.

Blessings to you and yours this Resurrection season!

TIP OF THE MONTH:

The more days that pass between January and you, the more apt we all are to forget some of those healthy goals we set for ourselves at the front of the year when resolutions flew through the air like gossip at a
knitting circle. Regardless of whether you’re on track with your goals or not, the one healthful reminder that we all need from time to time is to drink more water! A friend of mine once asked a nutritionist what single thing could be done to improve health- the answer was to drink enough water!

Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day will improve skin conditions, help soften brittle nails, and enhance your overall wellness and energy level by moving toxins and waste through the body.

Healthy eating, exercising, getting enough sleep, and drinking lots of water will help provide a beautiful healthy glow that starts with making wise healthful decisions!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH:

Artichoke Spinach Casserole
4 T. milk
freshly ground pepper to taste
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 t. garlic powder

Place artichokes in a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish. Squeeze spinach dry. Place on top of artichokes. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Stir in milk and garlic powder. Spread over spinach.

Top with a grind of pepper and Parmesan. Cover and refrigerate as long as 24 hours. Bake, covered, at 350 degrees for 30 minutes; then uncover and bake 10 minutes. Makes 6-8 servings.

My mom and sister and I were at a wedding shower yesterday. We sipped punch, feasted on the kind of dainty finger foods that ladies delight in, and oohed and awed over china and silverware. I enjoyed chatting with the bride about the sorts of things that we girls like to talk about, how they met, what she was thinking at this time last year, and of course came the question, “have you picked out your dress?” I relished in hearing the details of the color (for the few men who might read this, there are different colors of white! ), the style of the skirt, etc. But when she got to describing the top, I was delighted to hear her say that she is having a bolero jacket made to go with her wedding dress which came strapless.

“It’s just so hard to find them that aren’t…”
“Tacky?” I asked.
“Yes!”

We went on to talk about how so many formals make women look either poured in to the dress, spilling out out of the dress, a display of entirely too much skin, or some raunchy combination of the aforementioned. “I don’t know what the designers are thinking in (this bride is also a fashion designer, by the way), it’s like it’s all that there is out there!” she shared.

While I’ve yet to be on the hunt for a wedding dress, I too have rummaged the dress racks for modest formals! I know how hard it can be… As a matter of fact, a very common question we get here at Bellissima, is “do you sell modesty formals?” As of now, we have not expanded to include that in our inventory, although we do sell bolero jackets to aid this problem. That aside, I do understand where everyone is coming from.

So the question is, what should be the standard for formal wear? Is it okay, because it’s a formal event to have a different set of standards? Is it okay to wear what everyone else is, because we haven’t found anything better? To find that answer, we must of course look to God’s Word, to His standards for His daughters!

1 Tim. 2:9 says, “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly”

We know that it is His heart that His daughters dress in a way that is chaste and modest, because it honors our bodies, our brothers in Christ, and it helps to provide us with protection from men with less than honorable intentions. None of those things are occasion sensitive. Even at a formal wear we want to be known as chaste and honorable women who represent Christ, we need to honor others in the room, and we want to have that protection that “taking care to cover” offers. The blessings of modesty do not change, even at a formal event!

I have found that when we seek to honor the Lord in this area, when we “take care to cover”, He blesses! I cannot tell you how many times that I’ve asked for the Lord to help find a dress for an event, and He does. He can give some wonderfully creative ideas as well as ways to make your “party dress” both modest and beautiful. Even if you find a dress that you think is beautiful, that is perhaps immodest, take an extra moment to creatively consider ways to make the dress modest before putting it back on the rack.

For example:
- I have found that bolero jackets seem to have been created to help make formals “wearable” for daughters of the King! You can wear them with a long formal, even if it’s strapless (the positive thing about a strapless gown is that it is not low cut), and you have a formal that is both stylish and modest.

-Shawls are also helpful for this, given they can be hassle to keep situated!

-You can often get a dress altered for a reasonable cost at a tailor or dress maker. A friend of mine has even been able to get dresses that were backless to be altered in such a way, using the same material as the dress, that made them completely modest!

-If you are handy with a needle, I’ve found that you can even alter them yourself (although it does require the help of a friend!), add straps, etc.

Be creative, be willing to look outside the box, but most of all ask the Lord for the “right dress” and for good ideas! Is the Lord concerned about such things, you may be wondering? I know He is! In Luke 12:27-28, Jesus says,

“Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?”

Our Lord Jesus says, look at the lilies, I have clothed them! And yet, it amazes me to realize that not only did He take the care to simply clothe them, but He clothes them beautifully! More beautiful than Solomon, who had wealth and fame!

The Lord does care about what you wear and what is important to you, is important to Him. He loves you so dearly, my friends. He delights when we bring these seemingly small problems to Him in the same way that we delight when a little child lifts up helpless trusting arms and asks us for help. Honor Him in your choices, my friends. Don’t dress with a double standard. He will bless you!

For His glory,
